What is equally important is that the price of entry level has come down. I see two avenues: one vinyl and the other streaming or downloading digital music files. The vinyl path is a little more expensive, however. The Audio Technica AT-LP60 is an excellent turntable, but to get into a more emotionally involved sound would require a better turntable and preamp combination.
Let us start with the turntable, tonearm, and phono cartridge. Each component is exceptional. Not only that, but they have already been setup and optimized in advance. This combination offers an engaging and lively sound that outshines all of its peers. Other tables which might have more expensive phono cartridges do not have the precision bearings of the Rega.
Rega spends money where it counts the most. A separate phono preamp will be needed, however, since the Rega has no builtin preamp. A lot of money can be spent on a quality phono stage. On the digital side, the route to take is MQA. It sounds great. See Time Smearing for further information on downloading. Moreover, the Red is an audible improvement over the Black. It only works with an Apple computer as of now. We have some amazing options today for getting into good sound — not just good sound but very good sound.
This will help introduce many young people to the quality of sound that, heretofore, could only be attained through very expensive audio components. If we do not bring young people in then great audio will just fade away because of the barrier of overpriced high end components that only rich people can afford. But cables costing as much as automobiles? In some cases they do offer improved sound, but not that much improvement.
Young people are not into buying products for vanity reasons. They are just too smart. We will process everything through Audirvana Plus and then finally listen to iTunes direct without any processing. This should be interesting. If you already know that everything will sound the same please go on your merry way. I am assuming and hoping that all the files in question came from the same master tape, but I do not know this for a fact.
The album is relatively new and was probably recorded using single bit DSD technology as are many contemporary albums. Barnes and Noble which sold me the vinyl, says they go back to the source as do Apple. Acoustic Sounds are know for their impeccable sourcing.

Higher resolution flac files look at 24 bits of information at a time and oversample them at DSD oversamples the bits one at a time, but at a very high rate of 2,, times per second 2.
Theoretically, this is equivalent to analogue sound. Fast enough to fool the ears, right? Contemporary master tapes are processed this way initially, and, the argument goes they should be translated this way.

We shall see. We listened to all the sources mentioned above. There were differences in the sound we heard.
In addition, the Audirvana Plus music player does wonders with voice, no matter what the recording format is. The best voice reproduced came from the vinyl recording. The DSD file was a very close second. The straight iTunes version had too much edge, but when processed by Audirvana Plus it was much more listenable. Female voice is the acid test.
We just do not want the voice to sound like acid to the ears! Overall, my listening session was quite enjoyable, relegating the unprocessed Apple AAC to mostly casual listening. The vinyl and DSD versions made you feel that you were sitting in a real performance. Both were three-dimensional. The vinyl had a little more bloom which made you think you were listening through a very good tube amplifier.
Some might say this bloom is a form of distortion. It may be but I love this sound. It grabs you emotionally and brings you into the performance. The DSD seemed to have a tighter bass response than the vinyl, though both were extended. I liked the brush sound on the cymbals more on the vinyl.
This is where AAC really failed. And for the female voice, vinyl is still king. I clearly liked DSD. It is better than high-resolution flac. Have not tried this yet. If this has been your experience, please chime in.

Digital sound is getting better and the price of admission for the participation of the masses has been greatly reduced! How would you like to upgrade your audio system to exceptional performance? I am talking about a very low cost and simply upgrade that you can do in the privacy of your own home. Let me start with vinyl. I love the sound of vinyl as many audiophiles do. There is so much music recorded in those grooves.
But to be fair, the get the best out of those vinyl grooves one needs some very expensive equipment. The turntable, tonearm, cartridge, and phono preamp has everything to do with the sound of vinyl. Over the years vinyl playback has improved significantly. We have discovered a lot about the proper setup of the playback equipment over the years. More could be said, but suffice it to say that a long development time and greatly engineered products have restored the vinyl as a premium playback system.
Much credit should be given to the wonderful audio reviewer Michael Fremer, who never gave up on vinyl. Have we learned as much about the relatively new digital playback system. Probably not, but I believe that digital is starting to come into hits own. Early digital playback equipment did not seem to help matter much, even on expensive machines. But over time the CD players have improved — better transport decks and digital to analogue converters.
Very expensive players do sound a little better today, but they may have become obsolete. Clearly, reading digital music files from static computer memory has an engineering advantage over any spinning CD.
We can download digital files, even high-resolution ones, and get a better sound source. But there is another element which is now starting to be understood. And I believe this element will revolutionize digital sound in many ways. What am I talking about? Bits, I am talking about bits. All bits are not the same. Theoretically they are. Their timing, however, is critical. Jitter can ruin the musical waveform. We must extract all the bits carefully without smearing the digital information stored.
One way of doing this is through high-resolution digital audio. But hi. These recordings use oversampling of the bits as well as higher bit rates of processing power. It is easier to get better sound from the bits with these techniques. What about improving the sound of 16 bit 44 kHz?
What about all of our legacy digital recordings? Can they be improved? It turns out that there is much more music in those bits than we thought. Sophisticated processing of the bits can make a huge difference. Apple iTunes does not use hi. It does not even use CD quality playback.
But Apple has shown that even its AAC recordings can sound much better careful attention to detail. What they are doing we are not quite sure, and they will probably not tell us. But Apple is asking for hi. I have a lot of Apple music files that I want to keep. I just want them to sound better.
Here is the magic. There is an inexpensive product which will do the job and then some. Just download that latest software music player from Audirvana Plus. It will play high-resolution files, stream music from Tidal, and even play the latest rage files. More about this later. But, for me, even more importantly, it will play all types of digital files, including AAC files, and make them sound one hundred percent better. It has some shortcomings, but not sonically. It will not steam Apple Music.
But it will play all your iTunes playlists, provided the files are downloaded. It will not work with Apple Airplay. Airplay, of course, does not do hi. But Audirvanna Plus handles low res. Well, there is a work around. Just download the software app Airfoil. Airfoil is such an easy app to us. I like it better than Airplay. You see it in the upper left-hand corner on the screen shot below. Audirvanna Plus is simply magic. In my opinion, it sounds almost analogue no matter what files are used.
This gives you the chance to compare apples to apples, oranges to oranges. I am very confused. I downloaded a DSD64 in 5. It played beautifully and Audirvana reported that it was playing a DSD64 and other info. There must be something wrong with me. At age 61 I am beginning to enjoy classical music. Maybe it is to do with brain damage. Something I am quite serious about. I am unable to walk and my ability to communicate can be impaired and I sometimes write nonsense.

There is no native driver support for higher resolution PCM and it is clear from the beginning that a custom driver needs to be created for this platform whether it is for regular PCM or DSD… ASIO is not directly a hardware driver, but sits between the audio playback application and the hardware driver.
